Fires in the early 1900s were very dangerous and could more easily get out of control because flammable material such as straw was used to insulate houses and barns. Settlers didn’t have the modern equipment that exists now to fight fires with huge firetrucks full of water. Many settlers didn’t even have quick access to large amounts of water.
