First Nations people did not know how to write in Standard Roman Orthography or handwrite words on paper because signatures were not a part of many First Nations cultures. Just by touching the pen with their hand meant signing a treaty to them. Elders also tell of First Nations Chiefs who practiced signing an ‘X’ for days before signing the actual treaty.
