Wilfred Burton

Wilfred Burton was raised on a farm just north of Glaslyn, Saskatchewan. He is a graduate of the University of Regina (B.Ed.), First Nations University of Canada (B.A.), and the University of Victoria (M.Ed.). Since beginning his teaching career in 1979, he has taught in La Loche, Regina, and Saskatoon, working primarily in elementary schools and later at the University of Regina with SUNTEP and the University of Saskatchewan.

Now retired, Wilfred devotes his time to volunteer work with organizations such as Gabriel Dumont Local #11 and the Open Door Society. He continues to support Indigenous education as a knowledge keeper (Saskatchewan Ministry of Education and Saskatoon Public Schools), while also doing contract work for various educational institutions. His creative interests include beading, rug hooking, reading, and writing.

Wilfred is the published author of numerous Métis-focused children’s picture books. His most recent titles include Kohkum's Royal Bannock (Thistledown Press, 2025), Road Allowance Kitten: Full Circle (Gabriel Dumont Press, 2025), and a young adult novel, If This Buffalo Coat Could Talk (Cumberland Press, 2025).

His deep love for Métis culture and the arts comes from his Michif mother, Georgina Nolin, who passed on her passion for storytelling, fiddle music, and dance to all her children.
